Kicking Around with “The Albert”

I was highly disappointed to learn back in March that the U.S. Men’s Soccer Team did not qualify for the London 2012 Olympics. I even bought my husband the official away game jersey – knowing that is was highly plausible that we would be mocked among locals who have been celebrating football long before the United States.

When we first arrive in England, we’ll be landing in Heathrow Airport and taking a rental car to Newcastle to watch two soccer games. We made these plans when we bought our plane tickets in November, prior to knowing which teams would be playing. The team draw for the group phases was made on Tuesday at London’s Wembley Stadium, and as it turns out, Spain will be playing Honduras at St. James’ Park Stadium in Newcastle. And wouldn’t you know it, if the U.S. Men’s Team had qualified, they would be in Honduras’ spot and we would be watching the U.S. vs Spain!

Congrats to the U.S. Women’s team for qualifying!

*“The Albert” is the name of the London 2012 football. The name is based on cockney rhyming slang – with ‘Albert Hall’ (one of London’s most iconic landmarks) meaning ‘ball’.
